This is the first time we’ve taken Sharing Links down for maintenance during the beta period. I hated to do it, but there is some code that needs to be rewritten .. and the site just wasn’t playing nicely with others (meaning its performance was affecting all my other sites.)
So .. when we get these pesky problems taken care of, we can continue to focus on adding functionality .. and then expanding our beta test to MORE USERS.
The programmers have warned me though, that they do not want me to open the flood gates to the public. So I am thinking we will add users via an invitation system. All our existing users will get invites that they can pass around. That way we can grow in a controlled manner, as the programmers watch the system performance.
Maybe I’ll give each existing user ten invites. What do you think? Like the idea?

Is it possible to use this opportunity to ‘weed out’ the links to commercial sites that want users to pay to register before you can see what’s there and of use! I thought the idea of Sharing Links was to provide good quality sites for teachers - some of them appear to have strayed out of a school domain .
Arggh! What am I to do now that ALL my links have disappeared! How about a procedure to download and backup the links for individual users?
Sharing Links is mainly a social bookmarking site with a educational base, if you start “censoring” what each user has for their “bookmarks”, you might as well rule out what we find important. As for commerical sites they can be set a private if necessary …
most of the websites try to sell things eeven STNWK.
Dave,
I heard you loud and clear about a bookmark backup. Look in your “My Bookmarks” page, and you will see a link to export all your bookmarks in XML.

Vicki and Dave,
The entire issue of weeding out the “commercial links” is a thorny one. I prefer to think of it as weeding out the “spam links.”
I have already deleted many accounts that seemed to be primarily about promoting a single site. There still are users, however, that intersperse “spammy” links with good ones.
I continue to rely on all users to report bad (or spammy) links. And I do want to continue this conversation as we grow.
I know that I often use “private” for those commercial links that I think are off-topic. For example, my research on places to rent an overseas cell phone, or some of the Internet marketing sites I follow, etc.
Thanks for the feedback. I am always listening.
